Within the last few years, there have been billions of parcels shipped in the United States. You read that right, billions of packages. What’s even more relevant is that US consumers are expected to continue spending billions on ecommerce in the next few years. These days it is so easy to have virtually anything dropped off right outside your apartment door. Thieves, or porch pirates as they’re now known, are targeting neighborhoods from coast to coast in search of valuables. It is a common issue now that you must educate yourself about. Here are four easy tips to help you avoid any porch pirates.
Ask for a Signature or Add Delivery Instructions
Depending on the value of the package shipped to your apartment, many online shopping sites will generally require a signature. But even if they don’t, you normally can. Whenever it’s possible, make a signature’s required, so packages do not sit – a tempting porch pirate to snatch it in plain view all day. Usually, you’ll also have the option to leave some delivery instructions so that you can hide it somewhere around your apartment. Thieves are less likely to snatch it if they don’t know where it is in the first place.
Have Packages Delivered To Your Office or Apartment Neighbors
If you work an office job (and your boss doesn’t care), you can have any packages delivered right to you at work instead of having them sit outside your apartment all day. One other option is requesting to have your parcels delivered to your apartment lobby; that way you know it is in good hands. You could also have your packages dropped off to your friends, roommates, neighbors or friends. Again, assuming they don’t care.
Install Cameras and Anti-Theft Devices
Just seeing cameras installed outside your apartment could be enough to deter a would-be porch pirate. And if that doesn’t, you’ll have video footage of what happened. Most companies now offer products specifically designed to protect any packages left at your front door. From simple bags that you can latch to your front door to complex lockboxes, there’s plenty of options on the market.
Have Packages Dropped Off to a Hub or Retailer Near You
Most delivery companies now have the option to have your packages delivered to a secure location where you can pick them up at your leisure. Some of your options include Amazon Hub Lockers and Access Points from UPS.
