Three Ways for Dealing with a Noisy Apartment Neighbor

Three Ways for Dealing with a Noisy Apartment Neighbor

If you find yourself always bothered by excessive and loud noise from your apartment neighbor, you might be unsure what you should do.

While apartments are cozy and convenient, they do require people to live very closely to each other. Unfortunately, this means that noise from one apartment might travel from one to another. If you find yourself always bothered by excessive and loud noise from your apartment neighbor, you might be unsure what you should do. The best way to deal with a loud neighbor is to be respectful and honest. The next few methods will help you communicate your experience to your neighbors, and hopefully help both of you find a solution that allows you both to live quietly and comfortably.

Lead and Live by Example

Before you start accusing your neighbors of being rude, you should consider your habits that could be bothering them. Since a lot of us are home more often due to the current pandemic, we’ve had more time to notice some things that bother us. Do you hit snooze on your alarm until your dog barks to wake you? Do you have loud debates or conversations with your roommates or family? Do you sing along to music loudly while singing? Your neighbor may be noisy because they are trying to drown out your noise. Either way, recognizing your flaws as an apartment neighbor helps you approach your neighbor with a more understanding mind.

Write Them a Note

Verbal communication is usually recommended before written communication, as people are generally more understanding and willing to work out a solution when discussing the issue face-to-face. But, if for some reason, you do not feel like talking to your apartment neighbor about their noise, you could write them a note. Make sure your letter is worded carefully so as not to seem passive-aggressive, vague, or snarky. Communicate honestly and clearly what the issue is and that you’d like to work it out.

Contact Your Apartment Office

If everything else fails to work, you might have to head down to your apartment office or clubhouse to speak with your community manager. You might be a bit hesitant to take this step, but you should remember that you’re paying rent just like your apartment neighbor, for the right to be comfortable inside your own home. Your apartment manager can speak to your apartment neighbor and encourage them to keep the noises down, but they can back up all of their requests with the authority that you do not have.
