4 Options for Finding Cheap Furniture

Furniture

Trying to decorate your apartment with furniture on the cheap? Try out these routes.

If you’re looking for an apartment, there’s a good chance you’re going to need more furniture than you already have. A home doesn’t really feel like a home until there are proper furnishings, so it’s only natural to look into how you’re going to decorate your apartment before you actually move in. With that said, the price of furniture can add up quick—leaving you worried about whether or not you’ll be able to pay rent on top of all those initial furniture costs. Thankfully, there are some fantastic options out there for getting furniture on the cheap.

1. Don’t Be Afraid of “Free”

The best way to save money on furniture? Don’t spend money at all. Some people are intimidated by free furniture, but this is often the best place to start. Ask family members if they have any furniture they’re looking to get rid of and it may just be the case that they’re in the market for a new couch, leaving you with the old one. Many of the personal ad sites out there also have a lot of posts advertising free furniture, so long as you have a way to transport it away.

2. Thrift Stores

When people are trying to get rid of stuff quick, that stuff often ends up at a thrift store. If you’re not too worried about everything looking visually consistent, and in fact may even want an eclectic design approach, a thrift store may be the best option. Much of what you’ll find at a thrift store can easily be spruced up with a slipcover or a simple coat of paint, too.

3. Yard Sales

If you want to go cheap, yard sales are often the way to go. Now that the weather is nicer, we’re likely to see many people clutter their driveways or garages with their unwanted furniture. If you check online, you may even be able to find listings for yard sales to help guide you along the way; plus, who knows what hidden treasures you may find at a yard sale.

4. Furniture Outlets

New furniture from a store can end up costing a pretty penny, but there are also many stores that sell used furniture, furniture with minor cosmetic damage, or even liquidation sales when a furniture store goes out of business. Sometimes, you may find a good deal even at bigger box stores, so it’s worth checking around if you’re set on getting something that’s somewhat new or in style.
