You may have noticed that when the seasons change, so too do your utility bills. The summer heat that we’re experiencing right now comes along with a pricey electricity cost to keep your home cool and bearable during these hotter months. If you want to stay cool while on a budget, there are a few things you can do to make your rental electricity bills manageable while keeping the heat off of you. If you’re living in a rental and want to reduce your bills, read on to find out how.
Utilizing Fans
This may seem obvious, but it isn’t just about using fans, it’s about how you use them. Fans don’t actually make a room colder, they just provide a wind chill effect when you’re directly in front of them. This means that you shouldn’t leave a fan to chug away when you’re not even in the room.
Check Sealing
When you first move into your rental unit, be sure to check basic maintenance. You’ll want to take a look at the caulking around all windows and doors and be sure that they’re not allowing excess heat inside. If you do have drafts coming in, call your maintenance resource as soon as you can because that will help your home cool down for less money.
Using Shades
Of course, you don’t always need to leave your shades drawn, but it may be a quick way to cool down. Using large, ceiling to floor length curtains can easily block all of that water sunlight from heating up your home. When you leave for work in the morning you can close them and wait until the sun is beginning to set to open them again. This keeps your rental cool for you while you’re out and about!
Setting Schedules
Most AC units these days allow you to set a schedule to cool your rental off. Whenever you’re not home, set your AC around 85. Then have it set to cool down even more once you’re home. 78 degrees is the most energy efficient temperature that people tend to still find comfortable. maltagirls
